How to Decide What College to Go to

How to decide what college to go to is a huge decision. There are so many things to consider and factor into the decision. Similarly, there are lots of people who want to give their opinion on the matter. There are several ways to decide where to apply.

Here are several things to consider when deciding on what college to attend:

College Size: Small, Large and Medium Sized Colleges

Some people want a big school feel, while others want to be a big fish in a small pond. Or, some people want to attend a medium sized college. School sizes vary from university to university. Individual class sizes are also something to consider. Think back to your past experiences and decide what you liked and disliked. Additionally, consider your best learning environments: do you thrive in small groups or do you feel comfortable raising your hand in a large lecture? Are relationships with your professors important for you? These questions can help guide your decision related to college size.

College Distance from Home

The distance between your home and college is also something to consider. Some people feel more comfortable being close to home while others are excited to go far away. Transportation is key as well. You’ll need to be comfortable with the means of travel between your home and college, be it a car, plane or something else.

College Location

Location is an important decision. Some schools are located in the center of a big city like New York City, while other schools are located in less populated areas. For someone who wants access to lots of restaurants and action, they should choose a school that is close to a big city. That location will provide opportunities outside of the campus. Some people have grown up in a city and are looking for more of a rural or suburban community. Every college campus is going to have access to all the necessities anyone could need, however, going to a university in a less populated city will often provide a close-knit community on campus.

College Major

Some universities, depending on their size and specialities, offer specific college majors and programs. Larger schools usually have a more diverse course load, where a liberal arts school may be more limited in their options. Additionally, some schools have specialties, so it is important to consider specific programs. For example, some schools are known for their art programs, while other schools are known for their engineering programs. While there is something for everyone at each school, you should consider your passion and which school will meet those interests. If you are undecided, you might want to choose a school that has a large, diverse offering of programs.
