Bedsheet Banners

In the weeks leading up to the Lehigh-Lafayette game, spray-painted bedsheets begin to appear across Lehigh’s campus and neighborhood homes and businesses.

A bedsheet banner reading "Lehigh is Laf's Roman empire" hangs on a black house.

These sheets bear insults and jokes, often incorporating school-specific or pop culture references, against Lafayette. Some also include drawings to further illustrate their jabs.

The bedsheet banners can be found hanging from dorms, fraternity and sorority houses and academic buildings around the university.

A sign reading "Hawkwatch alert: Low I.Q. creatures wearing cheesy leopard prints expected in Bethlehem on 11/20. If confronted, be kind, speak slowly and call animal control at 1-800-BEAT-LAF" hangs on the side of the Lehigh University Police Department station.

Students living off campus also display banners on their homes, and some local businesses join the tradition by using their name in a derisive message to Lafayette.

Many people use their own bedsheets, but Lehigh also hosts painting nights and supplies students with materials they need to create banners.

A black-and-white photo shows a banner reading "Lehigh Will Dine Tonight" and a painting of a football player in front of a large stone building.

This yearly tradition joins the campus community together and builds school spirit..
